Red Tail Boa

 Hello!

I have recently purchased a 4 month old Colombian Red Tail Boa, and I had a few questions...

I'm aware of temps and everything and currently I have a 30 gallon tank for him- he's about 2.5 feet long, 28-29 inches maybe.

Firstly, the previous owners had him on Aspen bedding. Is this okay or is there a more recommended substrate for his breed? My ball python is on bark and she seems to love it, so I'm wondering if I should switch my new boa to that also, or anything else.

Secondly, I've only had him for a few days & he is shedding so of course I'm leaving him be, but how should I go about handling after the adjustment week is up?

If there's anything else important I should know, let me know! Thank you.

Hi nikkiroman766.

Congratulations on your new addition and welcome to the community! Substrate can be Aspen shavings, mulch-type such as coconut fiber bedding or reptile bark; dampened sphagnum moss. General Boa information can be found on our Care Sheets here. If you notice any of these red flag signs, contact your veterinarian.

  • Unusually frequent or infrequent shedding
  • Vomiting
  • Lethargic
  • Reluctant to eat

Can you be more specific on handling or any other questions you have? What is your temp/humidity? What kind of décor do you have? I would be love to answer any other questions you may have, just not sure where to start.

You may also want to try our new "Ask a Vet" feature on the Petco Community here: https://community.petco.com/. A link will appear on the right-hand side of the screen where you can input your question. Best wishes!

Re: Red Tail Boa

Thanks for the response!

For handling: after the adjustment week is up, should I just reach in and gently try to pick him up? Is there any way to get him to trust me beforehand?

Temps: The humidity usually stays between 50-60% and the temps are usually anywhere from 87-95, generally speaking the warm side of his cage stays at 90. The cool side never falls below 80 and sits comfortably at 84.

Currently the only "decor" I have is his water bowl and pyramid hide, since I'm not entirely sure what to purchase for him.

Re: Red Tail Boa

Hi, nikkiroman766. Our Animal care Specialist followed up and let us know that the most important thing to do is try to handle your snake every day. That will get your pet used to being held quickly.  It's also smart to wait until after the snake sheds. Be sure and wash your hands before and after handling any animal. We hope this helps. Let us know how things go. We would love to see a picture of your Boa!
