Hyper Rodents

I have a pet rat,and when I wake up in the morning to let him out of his cage for exercise he goes absolutly nutts.Is this normal.Please help.

I heard back from our animal care specialist on this and they suggested the following:

 

  • The hyper behavior could be from a lack of stimulation in their habitat so they have a lot of pent up energy.
  • Make sure your rat's habitat is equipped with things like an exercise saucer, chew sticks and a hideaway.
  • If you have more questions, you can also call or visit your local store and speak with one of our companion animal specialists for advice. You can find the number to call the store nearest you here.

My rats name is Thomas.He is light gray with a white tummy and feet and the very tip of his tail is also white.

What type of cage do you have? often times people have cages that are too small for their rats. The minimum cage size is 3 levels with the base level of 450 square inches of floor space. Also, rats MUST live in pairs. They are very highly social creatures.

I have a aquarium and an topper it is three levels hight.And my cousin has a female rat.And they are both very social.

Rats as well as mice adjust their sleeping patterns to yours most of the time. Originally they are mainly nocturnal but after a while they will sleep when you sleep and be awake when you are because they are interested in what you do. I myself have a hyperactive mouse named Splinter and he just never stops moving. Make sure he has a wheel that he can run on at all times and that he has other toys because this will help with that energy
