Re: Hyper Rodents

Hi Ratlover252525.

Thank you for your question and welcome to the community! I've sent this question to one of our companion animal specialists for more insight and will check back in as soon as I have an update. It sounds like your rat is excited to play when let out of the cage. Rats play during the night and rest during the day (nocturnal) but can adjust to your schedule. Here's a care sheet on rats that may be helpful: rat care sheet

Hi Ratlover252525.

I heard back from our animal care specialist on this and they suggested the following:

  • The hyper behavior could be from a lack of stimulation in their habitat so they have a lot of pent up energy.
  • Make sure your rat's habitat is equipped with things like an exercise saucer, chew sticks and a hideaway.
  • If you have more questions, you can also call or visit your local store and speak with one of our companion animal specialists for advice. You can find the number to call the store nearest you here.

I hope this helps, I'd love to see a photo of your rat! What's their name?

Re: Hyper Rodents

What type of cage do you have? often times people have cages that are too small for their rats. The minimum cage size is 3 levels with the base level of 450 square inches of floor space. Also, rats MUST live in pairs. They are very highly social creatures.

Re: Hyper Rodents

Rats as well as mice adjust their sleeping patterns to yours most of the time. Originally they are mainly nocturnal but after a while they will sleep when you sleep and be awake when you are because they are interested in what you do. I myself have a hyperactive mouse named Splinter and he just never stops moving. Make sure he has a wheel that he can run on at all times and that he has other toys because this will help with that energy
