Guinea pig

Hi. Just was wondering. My guinea pig always seems to have an itch. I was wondering about mites. She has no signs of lice. She has no hair loss. We have had her for 2 months. If she had mites wouldn't she have hair loss by now? Maybe she just itches?

Re: Guinea pig

Hi wlcattarin.

Welcome to the community! I'm sorry to hear that you're concerned about your guinea pigs itchiness. I went ahead and checked in with one of Petco's companion animal specialists on this and they provided the following advice:

  • Without hair loss the guinea pig doesn't have some type of ectoparasite.
  • It's best to go to the vet immediately to check for parasites and ringworm and any other possible skin issue that would cause itching.
  • If you don't have a vet, you can call the store where it was purchased, or any other local petco and see if they offer vetrinary services. If they don't, they may be able to provide advice on local resources that do. You can find the number to call the store nearest you here

I hope your piggie feels better soon, come back to share an upate with us!

Re: Guinea pig

Thank you! Yes I thought it was weird because she hasent lost any hair or doesn't have any bald patches. Thank you I do know where petco goes to a vet! Thanks again

Re: Guinea pig

Hi. My outdoor rabbits had mites before - if the skin is really crusty or bleeding, it could be mites, and you should take your guinea pig to the veternarian.

We tried finding homade cures off the internet instead of the vet, but that did not work. we soon realized that the mites were sooo bad we had to take my bunnies to the vet. The vet really helped out a lot! she gave us some medicine and the bunnies got better quick.   Bedding: The Vet told us not to use Ceder bedding, pine or wood shavings for the bedding, as these beddings often carry mites. She suggested we use Carefresh, which is bedding made out of paper rather than wood.

If you have any other guinea pigs, I suggest you don't put the infected guinea pig with the other guinea pigs, as Mites (or fleas!) are contagiouse. If it is mites, don't worry, because it is an easy case to solve, and mites are not usaully deadly to animals.

I hope your guinea pig gets well soon!!!!
