How to keep skunks away from your yard

  1. Keep trash cans or recycling cans closed and sealed. Skunks love to dig through your trash looking for food.

  2. Pick up any food bowls. Skunks are always on the lookout for an easy meal. (This goes for raccoons, too).

  3. Have fruit trees or bushes? Pick up any fruit that has fallen to the ground. Skunks love fruit, so they will come into your yard looking for a meal.

  4. Bring in your pets at dusk. Skunks are nocturnal, meaning that they sleep during the day and are up at night. If your dog needs to go out at night, always turn on a light or use a flash light to check for skunks.

  5. Clear out piles of wood or debris and make sure your house vents are closed or repaired if needed. Skunks can get into surprisingly small spaces, and are regularly looking for a place to sleep or to have their babies. If skunks do find a way in and have babies, let them raise their babies before closing up the hole.
