Hamsters

I have a question regarding my hamster's health.
My hamster is named Bolt. He is a male syrian hamster and is about two years old (We aren't sure; we got him at Petco and we've had him for a little over a year. He wasn't a baby when we got him, but he was young). Lately I've been noticing that he has become very lethargic lately and has developed two large bulges on each of his sides. Now, it is making it difficult for him to move around and he is not nearly as active as he used to be. He still eats and drinks normally and perks up whenever we take him out to play with him. I originally thought that perhaps the bulges could be because he is simply getting fat, but the bulges look abnormal. Does anyone know why this is and how I could treat it, or at least make it less uncomfortable for him? He doesn't seem to be in any pain, but just because he doesn't seem like it, doesn't mean he isn't.
Thanks,
Shelby Bergeron.
