New Fish

Hi I have a 40 gallon tank with 15 fish most of them are mollies and I recently got a new batch of 5 fish a red dwarf gourami and a couple mollies... one of the mollies that I got is now the smallest in the tank (silver molly). The red Dwarf gourami is now the biggest. The silver is picking at the red dwarf what should I do? This is my first tank and i got it about 6-7 months ago. Thanks!

Re: New Fish

Hi LoganA.

Welcome to the community, thank you for your question. I'm sorry to hear that you have a few fish that are being picked on by the others. I've sent this to one of Petco's animal care specialists for advice. In the meantime, here's an article on freshwater fish compatibility that may be helpful. One of the community moderators will check back in as soon as we hear back from the specialist.

Re: New Fish

Hi! Welcome to the community! I have had bully fish before. You can go to your local Petco store and surrender your bully fish to Petco. They will give your fish away to someone who has more of that kind of fish or someone who is getting that kind of fish. I hope this will help!

 Hi again LoganA.

I've heard back from our aquatic specialist on this and here are some questions and concerns to consider:

  • The first concern would be the stocking of this tank; 15 fish in this tank, mostly Mollies, which can reach 4" in length as an adult, and the male flame gourami which will reach 3". As we always recommend at least 1 gallon per inch of fish, and to consider the adult size of the fish , this tank could potentially be overstocked.
    • While mollies are not generally an aggressive species, males can be nippy with other fish at times, especially if they are somewhat tight for room or if there is a female around.
  • Another question would be how often and how much is the guest feeding their fish?
    • Another reason fish may nip at each other would be to compete for food. It's recommend that fish are fed 1-2 times a day, although not anymore then what the fish can eat in 2 minutes
  • As for the aquarium setup, what kind of decor do you have? If overstocking and feeding is not a concern, you may want to attempt to minimize aggression by adding and/or rearranging the tank decor.
    • This helps with any territorial behavior the fish might have over a certain area or hiding spot.
    • Any aquarium with multiple fish should have plenty of hiding areas to help the fish each feel secure and comfortable in their own unique or area of the tank.

I hope this helps!

The gourami is a female... The fish in the tank are about 1-2 inches right now and I might be getting another tank so I might try to move some fish into the new tank thanks for the suggestion!! Side note: the flame gourami is the same color as the food... Hahaha
