Could male ferret kill female?

I had a female cinnamon ferret that was two months old. London was too small to be with the adult ferrets so I searched for a playmate for her. I found a silver male that was two months old and London was now 3 months old. London was rough on Lobo for about two weeks and then Lobo had a growth spurt and was larger than London. Lobo played so rough they had to be separated at times. Two nights ago I noticed blood on London's cheek. I cleaned the area and made sure no more bleeding. She was splashing in her water bowl and seemed fine. They were kept separated. In the morning I noticed London lying in used litter pan. I picked her up and she was lethargic. I cleaned her and saw blood in her mouth. I spooned small amount of water to rinse her mouth. She died an hour later. Did Lobo kill London?

Our animal care specialist has followed up with us and provided the following information, FuzzLover. Although, it is possible for one ferret to kill another, without knowing more information about the incident and environment we cannot rule out other potential factors such as illness, toxic exposure, or potentially even an object swallowed. It was smart to separate them if they were fighting; similar to humans, not all animals of the same species will get along and that's okay, but catching it early is key.  If you are looking for more answers, a local veterinarian may be able to perform a post-mortem exam to provide more insight on your specific situation depending on what condition the body is now in.

Re: Could male ferret kill female?

I understand that you can't give exact cause of death but other than bite marks as clues, would death be from shaking or internal injuries? How would a ferret kill its prey? The whole incident has made me so sad! Lobo is obviously missing her too. He is used to being able to play after their separations and looks for her until he plops down.

Wow, this is really sad. My condolences.... I've lost two this year, one to cancer and one to old age and insulinoma, and can understand your feelings.

I've known ferrets to not get along and being kept apart, but not of one actually killing the other. An autopsy/necropsy would tell all.
