Nest for my Diamond Doves (It's Spring)?

I just adopted two Diamond Doves.  It's Spring and it looks like they are ready to nest.  What can I use to help them in the cage as far as materials?  She is often taking to roost in the seed tray and I want to make the best I can for them.  Thanks for any advice you may have.  Dano

Hi Whisperer. Thank you for your great Spring question on nesting, I've sent this to our one our animal care specialist for some advice. One of the community moderators will check back in as soon as we have an update. In the mean time, I'd love to see a photo of your new feathered friends!

Hi again Whisperer. I heard back from our specialist on this and they had the following tips:

  • Doves/pigeons would probably do well with a next box. Some recommend 2 next boxes per mated pair (but that is usually when living in larger group breeding operations).
  • There is commercial nesting material with is string like material, some folks shred paper, even CareFresh may work. Different birds like different substrates.
  • You can check out nesting supplies available online.

I haven't taken any pictures yet, but I have been thinking about it.  I do have a digital camera, but I haven't used the software since I upgraded my PC.  They are exceptionally good-looking and their courtship is just like a couple of lovebirds.  Much kinder and monogamous than the pigeons I have seen.  The former parents said it is a regular romance with them.  They are very affectionate and inseparable.

Thanks for passing on the word.  I don't know how they usually set up their nest, but there is a website devoted to them, so that is my next stop.

When I kept a mourning dove with an injured wing in the garage for a few days, I read that doves make nests out of leaves and twigs - so that's what I used in the cage!

You could provide your doves with a nest or a homemade one. Another option is to get a breeding box.

For nesting material you could cut up index cards, or buy some from a store. If you chose to buy it, you could use coconut fiber or any labeled nesting material.

To prepare the nest, you should put some paper towels and maybe some nesting material to encourage them. If they put the nesting material in any other place, you should move it back to where the availible nesting material is.

Good Luck with your breeding diamond doves!

Also, it's better not to use sticks or leaves from outside as they can contain bugs and diseases, even after being washed.

Re: Nest for my Diamond DovesN (It's Spring)?

I took out the abandoned eggs and now they put the green grass of shredded paper in the seed dish and she is nesting there.  This time I will leave well enough alone and let them nest there.  They are devoted to the egg/s.  I am hoping for the best and I won't intervene unless the hatchlings are in trouble.

you shouldn't of bred them. breeding can be very stressful on birds. plus if you don't know how to handfeed baby birds, or wean them, you shouldn't of done this at all because birds can abandon their young at any time for seemingly no reason. you can put the formula into their lungs by improper handfeeding, or burn their crop, or they can catch an illness like sour crop. that is why you leave it to the professionals to breed birds. you are not supposed to put a nest in ANY birds cage at all unless you ARE planning to breed. don't do this just because its bird breeding season. you should of done your research before buying a bird
