Why We Love Black Cats

By Leah_Pet on Oct. 4, 2016

Sophisticated and occasionally underappreciated, black cats are finally having their day. Dedicated to celebrating everything that makes these black beauties unique, it’s the perfect opportunity to show off the black cats you live with or the ones that you know. Although true cat lovers know every day is black cat day, it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t get a full day officially devoted to them. They’ve more than earned it!

Petco_BlackCat_Infographic.v5_B.png

How did black cats earn their day in the sun you may ask? Well, these sleek felines sure haven’t had an easy time getting to this point. Historically speaking, black cats have gotten a bad rap since the Middle Ages. Although the prejudice was there long before this creed, Pope Gregory XI gets credit for officially demonizing these innocent kitties—literally. Sometime around 1233 A.D., he published the “Vox in Rama” document, which claimed that black cats were the incarnation of Satan. For more than a century, they were needlessly slaughtered and their population dwindled considerably. The years passed, but their situation didn’t improve much. From the 15th to the 18th century, they got a reputation for being the evil companions of witches (usually kindly old ladies who fed cats) and were routinely burned in baskets alongside their human companions. Yikes.

Thank goodness the stigma is finally lifting on black cats. Modern day pet lovers are more than happy to appreciate these cats for what they truly are—strikingly beautiful pets with unique personalities and a rich history that now merely lends itself to an added air of mystery about them.

If you’re in the United States, you’ve likely heard that a black cat crossing your path is unlucky. However, this superstition isn’t quite so cut and dry. Worldwide, there are lots of commonly held fantasies and fallacies about black cats that persist even to this day. Fortunately, the majority of them foretell GOOD things will happen when black cats are around. Don’t believe it? Check it out below:

Today, cats are usually treated much better than they were in years past, but they still face difficulties. It’s most evident in shelters and rescues, where volunteers report black cats habitually getting passed over in favor of cats with more eye-catching colors. Not to mention, there are just more black cats in the world in general. That makes for a lot of kitties who get lost in the shadows when it comes to adoption time.

You don’t always get a cat. A cat gets you.

Petco_BlackCat_Infographic.v4_E.png

Thinking of adding a black cat to your family? By all means, get to a shelter and check out the many who are waiting for loving homes like yours. However, if you’re like many people in the U.S., it’s likely your perfect pet may just find you on his own. More than 35% of cats in homes started as a strays who chose their human companions on their own volition. If you’re lucky, it’ll be a black cat that crosses your path.

Did you know? Black cats are not only a dominant color amongst mixed breeds; many times they’re also purebred. And, although they look vastly different, seal point Siamese cats are genetically black cats. The only difference is they have a pointing gene that lets their coloring express itself only on their extremities. It’s not true across the board, but you may notice some black cats you meet have very Siamese-like meows or are basically quite talkative.

you’re in good company

Below are just a few of the many well-known black cats in history. With the prevalence of popular cats on the Internet, it may be that YOUR black cat is ready to have his 15 minutes of fame as well.

Petco_BlackCat_Infographic.v4_H.png

Speaking of celebrated black cats, felines in general have always been popular amongst literary types. In fact, Edgar Allan Poe wrote a famous story called “The Black Cat.” And guess what? It was published on August 19th, 1843 – just two days after Black Cat Appreciation Day. We can only assume Poe knew that this would be a beloved holiday in the 21st century. So go on, get out there and take the day to celebrate your furry ebony friends. While you’re at it, give a little head scratch to the tabbies, calicos, gingers, white and gray cats in your life too. Chances are they’re related to a black cat somewhere out there.

This is great info! We've had a black cat for over a decade now and she's been the sweetest thing ever. She likes to get into trouble a lot but we still love her all the more.

Thanks for this info, it's great to get little facts and who knew there was such a thing as 'black cat' day!

I have a black male kitty named Ravyn....he has a dark gray and white tuxie brother named Patches. and the same dark gray Russian Blue type solid colored sister Sasha.......I rescued them from my sister's house during a vacation not knowing my niece's cat had kittens.....they were dirty and hungry with no fresh food or water...I brought mom and kittens to my house to tend to them.....later paid to have the mom flea treated and spayed ....they said they would keep her inside and demanded to have her back.....sadly....they put her back out again and we think kids killed her......I was heartbroken and mad .....out of litter of 5....sadly I lost 2 kittens shortly after rescuing them....they were in poor shape and despite feeding them all kitten replacement milk and the mom....and other good food......it just wasn't enough.....I also have a large orange kitty named Cinnamon I found as a stray lost kitten with flea collar on.......I have probably rescued or cared for 50 or more cats in my lifetime......some strays sadly disappeared....some kitties had medical issues and I lost them despite vet care.......but I loved and miss every single one....still.......Ravyn will like to know ....there is a black kitty day !!!!!  Smiley Happy

I adopted Sid, a three legged black cat last year.  Sid has grown into a very handsome boy. He has two tortie sisters Thelma and Louise and now "thinks" he is the alpha of the family.   He tries to do everything his sisters do and if he can't jump where he wants to be he just climbs like a monkey!  He can run as fast as his sisters.  I am so glad I adopted a special needs kitten!

I adopted Joey, a black cat with yellow eyes, from a shelter 10 years ago. He is 15 now. Joey is the most loving and happiest cat I have ever had. He is always singing. He plays like he is two years old. My husband has been sick for a year now and Joey is always with him. I would adopt another black cat in a heart beat!!

We have 3 cats one is black, he found us he was feral, we have 2 other black ferals that we have taken care of for many years.  Our Blackie is his name, I know how original but he comes to it, he is a real surviver.  This last spring he was investigating the new roof being put on next door, he climbs ladders, he fell into the attic and ended up roofed in within one morning. That afternoon I started looking for him including next door to no avail. Contacted LostMyDoggie.com a fantastic organization who sent me great flyers which I put all over the neighborghood and the local humane society they notified local vet offices for me.  I searched for him 3 & 1/2 weeks, turns out the neighbors had been hearing noises from their walls and finally cut a hole in the plasterboard and out ran Blackie, he had been trapped and calling for help all that time. We were SO GLAD to have him home and he was VERY HAPPY also. He was thin but alive and is now a semi fat but very happy cat, He definetly used up at least one of his 9 lives.

I always was in love with cats , but I never realized that one day j will be adopting a cat until a stray black cat walked in my deck behind my house in my back yard . I let him in my house , fed him and he finally left . He came the very same next day and he kept coming until one day he did not want to leave . I kept him and I asked my neighbor about him , they told me that they know him and his owner moved away and left him behind so he goes from door to door to be fed and to get shelter . I was sad for him , meanwhile I decided to keep him and he was so happy . He changed my life and I was so attached to him but unfortunately last year he got really sick as he was having kidney failure . I took him to the vet but he said he would not make it . Sadly he passed after 1 month . I was so sad and in mourning . Finally my friends suggested that I should adopt new cats so it will make it easier on me losing my Marty ( his name) . Now I have two black cats male and female . They are both black I named the male Marty after my first cat and the female Isabella . They are happy and play all day long , I think I realized after Marty came into my life as pet that I should had adopted cats long time ago / Albert

We have 2 dogs and 5 cats. Of the 5 cats, two are black, one is white with a couple of gray spots and litter mate to the next one, he is orange with long hair(his dad was probably a Maine Coon) one is tan and brown(a siamese in the mix, perhaps. She has points but also a lot of brown on her body.)

Not to forget the dogs who are a Golden retriever and a brown dog who is German Shorthair Pointer and Chocolate Lab.

All the cats are rescues. All the animals are spayed and neutered. Although none of these animals are allowed to roam it is nonetheless important to get all your animals spayed and neutered. Better for their health and essential to not add to the population of stray animals.

I cannot imagine my life without pets. I think it has made me a more empathetic and loving person.

Thanks for the informative and humorous article on black cats. I enjoyed it very much.

I've yelled at people before when there was a black cat in front of them. They would say, "Black cats are bad luck! Get that thing out of my house!" Then I would pick up the poor kitty, hug it and hold it close to my heart, and yell, "BLACK CATS ARE NOT BAD LUCK! IF ANYTHING THEY'RE GOOD LUCK AND I'LL PROVE IT!" I have a black cat who has a white patch on his chest and lives outside, who loves attention, follows me a lot, waits for me to get home, etc. His name is Kurt and he's super adorable! During Halloween season, I take him in at night to protect him because there might be people in my neighborhood who would kill black cats as a Halloween tradition. It breaks my heart. I love black cats! God, please let them live. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen!

I love black cats!!!!  The most amazing black cat named Winston has entered my life recently.  I am from NJ and while visiting NC, I went to a flee market.  At the market, there were free kittens.  He was the last in the box.  He had to come home with me.  So, I bought him a plane tickets and he traveled back to NJ with me.  He is the most beautiful, graceful, bug hunter and under the blanket monster-getter I have ever known.  He is one of my eight wonderful feline companions and we all adore him.

I have 2 black cats. One chose our family he's a manx. The other should've been named PePe because he is obsessed with me. I took him from my sister who's friend abandoned him with her and he was on his way to a shelter where I knew because of his color wouldn't be adopted. I love them both.
