To The Boy In The Fur Coat

By PetcoFoundation on Feb. 28, 2017

Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign. Shannon Gearing submitted this story about the dog she adopted from San Diego Humane Society in San Diego, California.

To the boy in the fur coat:

We didn't expect to get you, and we didn’t know we needed you. It wasn't until we got the call that we had four hours to pick you up or we'd lose you forever, that questions stopped being asked and concerns stopped being considered and we just went to you. We dashed through Petco to get your supplies and flew through traffic to get to you in time, arriving just as your mom and sister were meeting their new families and you were waiting to meet us.

And just like that, you were a part of our family. Selflessness took on a whole new meaning when it came to suppressing your kennel cough and keenly hiding your medication in your meals. But we did it with a smile because your floppy ears and curious eyes could do no wrong.HolidayWishes_SanDiegoHumaneSociety2.jpg

You were our first puppy which meant our first potty training, first late night wake-up calls, first shoe chewer but above all our first fur-baby love. You taught us how to pay attention, look for signs you needed us, communicate better and put you above ourselves. For this, you've made us better fur parents and better people.

You are still teaching us every day. As much as we love your excitement and curiosity, we need to learn how you can show that to others without jumping on them. Unfortunately, not everyone loves your hugs as much as we do (we don't get it either). You teach us it's important to get outside every day and to change it up. We love that you figured out how to tell us this every morning with your wake up howls as morning alarms are no longer necessary.

So to our boy in the fur coat, we thank you for finding your way into our home and into our hearts. We can't remember what life was like before you and we can't image what it's like without you, but we do know it was not nearly as exciting or fulfilling. We hope to continue making your life a happy, healthy and exciting one every day and above all, we hope to continue to give you 100% of the love you show us every day.
