Through Love and Loss, Man Finds Comfort in Friendship with Cat

By PetcoFoundation on Mar. 16, 2017

Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Christopher Williams won CSM Stray Foundation in New York City a 2016 Holiday Wishes award.

The night I rescued an abandoned and abused little kitten from an eight-lane highway in Queens, New York, I had no idea how much my life would change. Lilu and I have been by each other’s side ever since.

Lilu’s whiskers had been chopped off, and it looked like bleach had been poured down her messy fur. It turns out, her coat is just very mixed – even her nose is two colors.

She and I have ridden together on trains and in cars, trucks, cabs and buses. We’ve lived in six apartments, endured the end of a long break-up, and survived two years of dating. As of now, I have been married a year, and Lilu’s helped me and my wife cope with the loss of loved ones and provided comfort while living apart when my wife attended college.

The only time I almost lost her was after an ex-girlfriend gave me an ultimatum: choose her or the cat. Her father was severely allergic to cats and owned our new apartment. I stuck to my guns and boldly chose “both.” We moved in together, and Lilu came with us. I was not about to give away my cat simply because someone else couldn’t be around her.

After we had split up a year later, I was so thankful I had stuck up for Lilu, so she can still be a loving part of my life today.

A vet told me Lilu was about six months old when I found her, so that means she’s just celebrated her fourth birthday. We’ve been playing fetch, and she’s been climbing on my shoulders ever since. She has taught me the meaning of unconditional love.

Anytime she’s scared by fireworks or lightning or needs some love, I’ve been there for her and wouldn’t want her to be anywhere else. I’m proud to be one of the best things that has ever happened to her, as she’s been the same for me.
