The Special Bond We Share

By PetcoFoundation on Mar. 7, 2017

Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign. Claudia Leon Burburan submitted this story about the dog she adopted from Halfway Hounds in Park Ridge, NJ.

After looking to adopt a dog for several months, my husband sent me an email with a picture of a 2-year-old Beagle who was looking for a home. The rescue group, Halfway Hounds, had previously found several forever-families for Jack, but due to his hyper personality and escape-artist tendencies, he kept getting returned.

None of this mattered to me as I looked at his photo. The look of longing in Jack’s beautiful eyes tugged at my soul and I knew he had to be ours. My family and I met Jack at an adoption event about one week later and it was love at first sight. At the time, he didn’t share this love, but that didn’t stop me.

At the adoption event, as I was getting to know my new friend, Jack’s former foster dad came over to the adoption area. As soon as Jack heard this man’s voice, Jack began shaking and whimpering with excitement. He ran to the man and covered him with kisses. My heart hurt. Would Jack ever be that excited at the sight of me? Would he ever share the devotion I already had for him in my heart?

Fast-forward seven years. Jack has given me the kind of love that cannot compare to anything in this universe. I have a wonderful husband, two beautiful and kind daughters and a loving cat. I mean no offense to them when I say that Jack and I have a bond that transcends all.

I wake up to Jack’s beautiful head on my pillow. I eat my breakfast cereal with Jack at my feet; his fur serving as a foot warmer. I come home from work and allow his warm kisses to erase the stresses of the day. I listen to my father describe his deteriorating health, while rubbing the baby-soft fur that lines Jack’s ears. I re-live the argument I had with my 12-year-old daughter and question my ability to properly parent a tween, all the while massaging the part of Jack’s thick neck that was meant for nights like this. I let my tears spill at the thought that my 14-year old daughter still isn’t home from the hospital as Jack laps up every droplet that runs down my face. I lay down at night stroking Jack’s warm body pressed against my own, knowing I am loved and appreciated. That he chooses to sleep in my bed is a blessing that I cherish. He could sleep anywhere in our house, but he picked me.

Jack is a gift from the universe sent to soothe my soul, warm my heart and remind me that I am not alone. I believe that I, too, am his gift from the universe; sent to embrace his hyper personality, erase the longing from his eyes and make his life so magnificent that he will never again want to use his escape-artist skills.
