Hammie Plays Hard to get Until She Finds the Right Family to Love

By PetcoFoundation on Jan. 31, 2017

Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Thomas Swafford won Austin Humane Society in Austin, Texas a 2016 Holiday Wishes award.

When I first met Hammie, she was hanging out by herself. She sat in the corner like she was in a dimly lit dive bar not wanting to be disturbed.

I decided to meet her and say hi anyways. I moved in slow, shuffling my Chuck Taylor's, looking around to see if anyone else was making the same move. No one was; I did an internal fist pump and thought this was my chance.

We made eye contact and started off with the basic small talk. I asked her if she had ever been here before, how she was doing, what she thought of the weather, what she was drinking -- you know simple things.

After five minutes, I got nothing but a big sigh, as she rolled her eyes and turned her head in the other direction, so she didn't have to look at me.

I was cool with it though. I've been rejected many times, but I wasn't going to settle for rejection this time. At least not right off the bat, I kept pursuing her. I thought maybe my questions were dumb, so I followed up with a new set. I asked her questions like, where she was from and how did she end up in a place like this? Still nothing. Just another sigh.

Then I brought up the "F word.” Her ears perked. I thought it was kind of inappropriate for this setting, but my last ditch effort worked. She immediately turned and looked at me and almost smiled. I asked her if she would like to go home with me and play some "Frisbee?" She accepted and as the saying goes “the rest was what dreams are made of."

Since bringing Hammie home in 2012, our lives have changed forever. My wife had never owned a dog before, and she hit a homerun with this one. We didn't want to just any adopt a dog; we waited patiently for the right dog to adopt us.

I have never had an animal turn so many heads and touch so many lives. She carries her own Frisbee everywhere, stars in commercials, baby announcements, fashion shows and donates her therapy time to my co-workers.

Hammie is always the first one to greet me when I get home, and I make sure she's the first one I greet no matter what. It’s our tradition. Hammie made our family grow in more ways than one.

How sweet,   Its a true love story in the making.  I have adopted many pets from shelters,  & I

think they know when they have just met a loving family for life.  My last puppy I adopted came from W. Virginia,  coal mining area.  He was horribly abused and left in the woods to die,  I found out about him thru a friend and thats all that was written.  We met the van bringing him up here to where we live my husband took him out of the crate,   it was instance love. He is now 5yrs old and the most sweetest, gentlest, kindest dog & healthy & happy.  We have just adopted a puppy,  and the two get along great,   they sleep, eat, poop, & play & follow each other as if they were never seperated.  Its so heart warming to see the two & to know where they came from and to know that they will always have a FUREVER Home.  I just wish more families would welcome these animals into their homes & understand all they need is a little love & patience, & they will give you unconditional love & friendship right back to you.  God Bless you & your family.

Love your story! I think all dog lovers can relate--at least I know I can.  That's just about how my Ginger became part of my family.  I wasn't even looking for another dog but when I saw her...I just knew it was meant to be.  Continued blessings to you and your family!

This story touched my heart and brought tears to my eyes.  I have rescued all of my animals except my fantastic Daphne.  My 1 wonderful lap/golden mix Duchess passed in 2013 and she was by best adoption from the Dane County Humane Society in Madison, WI.  My 5 cats have all been rescues from here and there.  My Daphne was a birthday prestent from my Brother who bred his Golden.  Wonderful birthday gift!  This story is the reason adopted animals are so special.  But, aren't all animals special!!!!

Great story!  It reminds me of the time I adopted my two schnauzers and a yorkshire terrier....I call them "the three stooges" for their energy, love, faithfulness and wonderful nature.Yes, they do give unconditional love, and they ask for nothing in return.....more people should adopt those wonderful, loving pets waiting for their forever homes!  You'll never regret adopting a pet....they steal your heart and enrich your lives ten fold, forever!  They also soothe you when you're down, or simply feeling lousy!  I've  always had a pet, and always will.

Thank you for the story. I adopted my Tobie after meeting him in front of Petco. I had just lost my two loving dogs for reasons and my Mother. Tobie saved me and he is a joy every day. Except for stinkie feet.

This was a great story. Reminded me of one of my past rescues (Melvin), from Melrose MA.  We had to lay on the foster mom's floor for 45 minutes before he would come to us for a wheat thin cracker. Needless to say, he came home with us that day. He spent his forever days with us for 13 yrs. I have only given rescues a forever home all my adult life, I am now 72 and just gotten a chihua/mix a new home.
