Couple Finds New Passion After Cat Adoption

Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Chelsea Frankovich won Ashley Valley Community Cats in Vernal, Utah a 2016 Holiday Wishes award.

In the summer of 2013, mice invaded our chicken coop. I don’t like mice.

After having the wits scared out of me too many times, I sent my husband to adopt a cat. I had heard about cat adoptions happening in our small rural town and knew I wanted to adopt from the new rescue group, Ashley Valley Community Cats.

Not being a big fan of cats, I didn't care what cat he got, so long as he got a cat. I liked the idea of a cat way more than I liked the idea of mice being everywhere.

So, he went to the adoption event and told the lady he needed a cat -- any cat. To this day, I still can't believe she adopted a cat to him.

He came home with a tiny, partially bald, black and white kitten. We stuck her in the coop with our new baby chicks, and they became fast friends. A few weeks later, we got her spayed. When she returned, I felt bad for her and let her stay in the house while she healed. That changed our lives forever.

We both fell in love with Miss Cleo. We loved her so much that we decided all cats must be just as awesome. We started fostering for the same rescue group and currently foster anywhere from five to 15 kittens and cats as well as one or two dogs at a time. We also adopted three more cats. We have a full-on animal house.

Adopting our first cat changed our lives for the better. It opened my eyes to a love for cats that I never thought possible and to the wonderful world of rescue work.

I love to hear the founder of Ashley Valley Community Cats, Elise, and my husband retell the story of Miss Cleo’s adoption. Apparently, Elise didn’t want to adopt the kitty to my husband that day, but her husband talked her into it. I'm grateful she let us adopt Miss Cleo because she changed our lives for the better.

We have joined forces with Ashley Valley Community Cats to build a rescue facility on our property that will house cats and dogs while we look for loving homes for them. If not for Miss Cleo, we wouldn't be on this amazing adventure!
