Coming Clean About How Dirty Your Pet's Belongings Really Are

By PetcoBlogger on Mar. 28, 2017

Spring cleaning season is upon us, and that means it's time to care for your pet's toys, bedding, dishes and more. Nearly one-third of more than 2,000 pet parents who responded to a March survey are unaware their pets' toys collect dirt, bacteria, yeast and mold. What's also alarming is 1 in 5 pet parents wait at least a month to clean their pet's food and water bowls—even though pet bowls are one of the dirtiest items in the house! Ready to be grossed out? Let's dish the dirt, (literally).

Food bowls, water bowls and pet fountains
One in 100 pet parents surveyed had NEVER scrubbed their pet's bowls!

Did you know that your pet's food bowl is likely one of the dirtiest items in your home? Our study found that nearly one in five pet parents wait at least a month to clean their pet's food and water bowls. And one in 100 pet parents have never scrubbed their pet's bowls. Six percent continue to use cracked or chipped feeding dishes or bowls—a habit that could cause cuts or other injuries to your pet's mouth.

Solution: Keeping your pet happy and healthy can be as simple as washing your pet's bowls daily in hot water with antibacterial soap. (Here's how to know when it's time to toss).

Beds and blankets
Six percent of pet parents surveyed had NEVER cleaned their pet's bed!
Sixteen percent of pet parents surveyed were unaware of how often their pet's beds and blankets should be washed, even though 76 percent were aware that they should clean their pet's bed at least once a month. Even more surprising, six percent of pet parents had never cleaned their pet's bed, and nine percent admitted they'd gone months without cleaning their pet's bed or bedding. Eight percent of dog parents even admitted that their pet had contracted fleas from a dirty dog bed. Yuck!

Solution: Keep your pet's skin and coat healthy and help keep them flea-free by rotating their bedding once a week. If the bed has rips or stuffing coming out, it's time to toss and replace.

While we're talking about it, have you ever wondered what your pet is bringing to bed? We have

Toys
One in five pet parents surveyed had no idea how often they should replace their pet's toys.
When you think about it, you might expect your pet's toys to be a bit germy, especially since most toys spend much of their time in your pet's mouth. Yet, roughly one-third of pet parents surveyed were unaware that their pet's toys likely contained dirt, bacteria, yeast or mold. And one in five had no idea how often they should replace their pet's toys. Avoid injuries by regularly checking your pet's toys for tears, sharp edges or other damage.

Solution: Keep hard plastic toys clean and fresh by routinely washing them (like once a week) in hot water and mild soap. Here's how to know when it's time to toss a toy (in the trash).

The litter box
One-third of pet parents surveyed had no idea how often to replace their cat's litter box.
Cats are fastidious creatures, especially when it comes to their litter boxes. Yet nearly a third of pet parents surveyed had no idea how often to replace their cat's litter box, and one in five were not aware that it ever had to be replaced. Guess what? Not surprisingly, (given what goes into it) the litter box is the not-so-happy host for a variety of bacteria and parasites. And, when you don't keep it clean, kitty might find some place she'd rather go...which might not make you happy.

Solution: Regularly clean your cat's box with mild, unscented dish soap and hot water to keep "cat smells" to a minimum. Read more about how to safely clean your cat's litter box. Oh, and plan on replacing your litter box at least once a year.

Grooming tools and flea treatments
Nearly 50 percent of pet parents surveyed admitted they don't regularly clean out their pet's medicine cabinet.
Nearly half of pet parents surveyed admitted that they don't regularly clean out their pet's medicine cabinet to get rid of expired flea and tick treatments or expired medicines. Unfortunately, out-of-date pest treatments lose their effectiveness in helping to keep your home a flea-free zone.

Solution: Regularly check expiration dates, and toss combs, brushes and spa accessories that are missing bristles or teeth or are just plain worn out.

The good news? By regularly washing your pet's belongings, serving a healthy diet and taking him in for regular check-ups, you're making a big difference in his lifelong health. Go you!

Where did you get the disgusting photo of the overly-used litter box filled with clumps upon clumps of soiled litter??  Too many people say that they SCOOP their cat's litter box ONCE a week!  A few times a day is what a cat wants!

UGH!

Yes, keep your pet's belongings CLEAN and replace them often.
