Border Collie Helps “Mom” Out of Her Rut

By PetcoFoundation on Mar. 16, 2017

Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Jacqueline Adams won Indian Summers Border Collie Rescue in Minerva, Ohio a 2016 Holiday Wishes award.

Mom hasn't shown her teeth lately. That might sound like a good thing, but it's not. Unlike us dogs, humans show their teeth when they're happy. Mom says she's in a rut. I think that means she quit having fun. It's up to me, Zeke, to fix that.

Mom works on her computer all morning. No wonder she's in a rut. What could be less fun than sitting in one spot? I drop a running shoe by her chair. She doesn't take the hint, so I bring another – and another. Then I bring a boot and a roller blade.

Mom finally looks up. She sighs and picks two shoes that look the same. Yay, we're going for a run. But it takes Mom a long time to get ready. She has to go to the bathroom. Why can't she just go out in the yard like I do? Then she has to tie her shoes. I have twice as many feet, and I don't need shoes.

We run around the neighborhood. People wave at us and show their teeth. When we get home, Mom's eyes are brighter, and her shoulders aren't sagging anymore. She says, "What would I do without you, Zeke?"

Now she says, "It’s time to run errands," and her shoulders sag again. I think errands are fun. But the way Mom says it, you would think she was going to the vet.

We go to the credit union to withdraw a dog biscuit. At the drive-thru, I lean as far out the window as I can. The lady inside shows her teeth and gives me two biscuits. She gives Mom some paper stuff called money. I don't know why Mom takes it. I can tell she doesn't want it because she gets rid of it as soon as she can.

We go to Walmart and the gas station so that Mom can get rid of some money. Then we pull into the Lowe's parking lot. Finally, a store where dogs are allowed!

Inside, two kids are shopping with their grandma. The kids point and say, "Look! A dog!" The grandma says the kids are sad because their dog got old and is gone now. When the kids pet me, they show their teeth a lot. That makes the grandma and my Mom show their teeth too.

We stand in line, waiting to get rid of more money. The man in front of us has a long beard and pictures on his skin. He doesn't look happy about running errands either. But when he sees me, his eyes get brighter. He tells Mom about his dog, and she tells him about me. Pretty soon, they're both showing their teeth.

When we leave, Mom says, "Thanks, Zeke. You make everything fun."

Glad I could help mom with that rut.
