After Devastating Loss, Woman Takes Another Chance at Love

Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign. Kristen Buccigrossi submitted this story about the dog she adopted from Paws and Prayers in Akron, Ohio.

When I lost my dog in 2014, I honestly didn't think I would ever be able to love again. When Toby had gotten sick, I began my path of self-destruction. When I watched him take his last breath in my arms, that's when I knew I had to get better, not just for myself, but for him. I wanted to be the person my dog thought I was, or could be, and this person was not it. I needed something to bring me back. I needed to do something positive, needed to find something/someone to give that love to again. And that's when I found Brody.

When I saw his picture, I was apprehensive. I loved Toby so much, how could I ever give a dog that same love? His story is what broke me. Brody was found on the streets and was extremely sick. He had parvo virus, was malnourished and was depressed because of all of the time he had to spend in the hospital. He was named "Cash" because of all the money spent to make him healthy. No one was sure he was going to make it, but he had a spirit that told them there was no stopping him. That's when I knew I had to take a chance on love again.

I had never believed in love at first sight until I walked into the Petco on that cold Saturday afternoon in March of 2014. I was a sight for sore eyes, crying right in the dog food aisle when I first saw this little fur ball wagging his tail at me. I knew at that very moment not only was he coming home with me but that he was going to be my little everything. And he knew it too! We walked out of Petco that day knowing that we were made for each other.

When he walked into my home for the first time, he claimed his couch and his new toys. And he stole a spot in my heart that has only grown with time. He’s been spoiled with trips to grandma's house, Outer Banks and Virginia Beach. He takes all of my spare time chasing after his ball or pulling me down the street on walks to see his fur friends, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Brody has truly brought me back to life. He has given me so much love that I can't imagine my life without him. Adopting him was the best decision that I have ever made, and I let him know it every day.
