Adoption Stories: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Mildred Blue!

By PetcoFoundation on Feb. 18, 2016

If you ask any of the staff at PAWS Chicago about Lora Martyn, you’ll hear tales of one of their best, most dedicated fosters.

It’s funny to think that just a few short years ago, Lora didn’t even know what fostering was – and now, just three years into her fostering journey, she and longtime Petco Foundation partner PAWS Chicago are celebrating more than 100 dogs and cats that have been saved thanks to Lora!

“I’m playing catch up for all the years I didn’t know about fostering,” she laughs.

Although Lora has only been formally fostering shelter pets for a few years, she’s had a heart for helping animals since she was a child. She takes after her grandfather, who was known for rescuing and nursing injured animals back to health.

And, like him, Lora doesn’t shy away from a challenge. With a second bedroom dedicated to her fosters, PAWS always knows they can count on her.

“Whether it’s a nursing mom and puppies, or elderly hospice felines – Lora has proven to be an incredibly patient, flexible and loving foster parent whose best intentions are clear in the care of her animals,” said Sarah McDonald, Associate Director, Media & Community Relations.

Recently, Lora fostered a sweet dog that touched her heart tremendously.

Mildred, a 6-year-old poodle mix, was rescued in December by PAWS. And Lora, who specifically requested a senior foster, already had special plans for Mildred Blue. Before she even met her, Lora knew Mildred Blue was going to be “the wedding dog.”

Two animal-loving friends of Lora’s were set to wed, and after learning that they had requested no wedding gifts, Lora wanted to do something special in their honor.

“I thought, ‘If they didn’t want a wedding gift, then a homeless animal will get one instead,'” Lora said. “Their love inspired the rescue of Mildred Blue. She was their ‘something blue.’”

Lora helped Mildred overcome canine flu and treated her to a groomed poodle cut. She spoiled Mildred with lots of love until a special someone took notice of her on Lora’s Facebook page.

A love connection was made. In honor of her newlywed friends Julie and John, Lora sponsored Mildred Blue’s adoption.

Lora says the happiest feeling is seeing one of her fosters thrive with their new family.

“Some people think they won’t be able to let [their foster pet] go, but what’s most important is what’s best for them,” said Lora.

Mildred Blue is now living a relaxing life surrounded by love. She gets along well with her sibling, a 17-year-old resident cat, and recently made a trip to Petco to pick out new toys and treats.

Thanks to fosters like Lora, PAWS Chicago helped nearly 6,000 pets find loving homes and families in 2015, and thanks to ongoing grant support from the Petco Foundation, they’re looking to top that in 2016!

When Julie and John learned of Mildred Blue’s story, they were incredibly touched by Lora’s heartwarming gift. “I wish every wedding registry would have a request to sponsor the rescue of a homeless animal in need of a loving home,” said Lora. “What a way to kick off a marriage!”

Hello,

I have looked elsewhere to no avail.  I need help!  I have applied for and been accepted to receive a Psychiatric Serviced Dog for my son, Aidan. I just need your help paying for the dog’s initial care and training.

Any suggestions, PLEASE??

My son, Aidan, was born with Holoprosencephaly (HPE) and sever cleft lip, nose, and pallet.  Shortly after birth, he was diagnosed with diabetes insipidus. With the help from very skilled surgeons, he is as cute at can be, and his form of diabetes is controlled with injections.   However, Aidan will forever be challenged with neurological and intellectual disabilities.     He struggles in school, has difficulty staying focused and on task, becomes hyper-anxious (especially around people), and has trouble socializing with peers. We found a Psychiatric Service Dog from Dog Wish, Inc. than can really improve his life.  With everything involved, to bring this dog home for my son, it will cost $15,000.
