Re: Male or Female

This varies greatly by species. Which species of bird did you have in mind?

Hi hollyrustyrileyOur specialist had some very helpful information to share. It depends on the color of the cockatiel. If the cockatiel is a normal grey, the males have bright yellow heads with bright orange cheeks whereas females only have a little yellow with duller orange cheeks. If they are white faced cockatiels, the males have bright white heads while the females only have a little bit of white on their heads. Pearl cockatiels keep their pearl coloration if they are females, but males lose the pearl coloration as they age.

There are a number of color variations, so if you have a particular color in mind, please let us know and we can provide additional information. Smiley Happy

Re: Male or Female

It depends.
Some birds have visual differences while others are basically the same. Sometimes the behaviors are different such as laying eggs and bow-coos. It really varies.

Could you please tell be the type of bird and send a picture?

Re: Male or Female?

I think it is interesting that it is the males that are usually more (and sometimes significantly more) "colorful". In nature, the males tend to be "more decorative", apparently to be more attractive to potential mates. BUT with humans, females -- otherwise not much different than males in appearance with the main exception of primary sex characteristics -- tend to be the ones that try to adorn themselves with make-up, hairstyles, clothes, jewelry, etc to appear more attractive and catch the eye of a male! (No need to mention male-dominance and patriarchy here!)
